Hey, Sky Fans!
Happy Friday!
So, our old friend Jupiter is at opposition this weekend. That’s, just like we talked about with Saturn earlier this month, the spot when an object is directly opposite another object as seen by a viewer between them.
To celebrate, who’s up for an observing project this weekend? How about an observing project that lasts 12 years?!
I have a new article over at Sky & Telescope today, where we talk about keeping an eye on Jupiter for while and seeing how things go. I’m really happy with the way this one turned out. I hope you’ll give it a read, and let me know what you think.
Thanks, sincerely, if you do.
Have a great weekend. If you’re in the path of Henri, please be safe.
Thanks for stopping by, and clear skies, everyone!
Poor Ophiuchus, shafted by the Zodiac people. He oughta sue!

I’m pretty sure there’s a strong case there, but I’m barely an astronomy writer, let alone an constellational attorney.

It never occurred to me that Jupiter’s oppositions would line up so neatly with Earth months. The math checks out, though. That’s a really neat thing to know!

Thanks, I’m glad you liked it! Yeah, I remember the moment I noticed the pattered and said “hey, wow!” No one else around me cared. 🙂

At my age of 74, I am willing to be part of the 12 yr project. I think I can make it.

I hope you’ll make it, Jim. We’re all better off if you do.

See you in August, 2033. It will be interesting how the Great Red Spot changes between now and then, since we do know it appears to be generally shrinking.

Yeah. Good point. I hope it sticks around. I’ve never been in the right place at the right time to see it with my own eyes. Hopefully some day.
